Does unplugging appliances save electricity? I don't think so, but my husband unplugs almost everything after using it, saying it saves a lot of electricity. I'd love everyone's opinions on this.

There is one small habit in our home that has become a surprisingly big topic of conversation: unplugging appliances.

My husband is convinced that unplugging electronics and appliances whenever we are finished using them can save a significant amount of electricity. He has gotten into the habit of walking around the house after dinner, checking outlets, and unplugging anything that isn't currently being used.

The television? Unplugged.

The coffee maker? Unplugged.

The toaster? Unplugged.

Phone chargers? Unplugged.

The microwave? Sometimes unplugged.

Even appliances that we use almost every day don't escape his routine.

He says that leaving electronics plugged into the wall means they are still using electricity, even when they appear to be turned off. According to him, all those little amounts of electricity eventually add up, and unplugging everything is an easy way to lower the monthly power bill.

I have always been more skeptical.

My thinking has been simple: if something is turned off, how much electricity could it possibly be using? Surely the amount must be so tiny that constantly crawling behind furniture to unplug things isn't worth the trouble.

But my husband insists that I am underestimating how much electricity these devices can consume while they are sitting idle.

That got me wondering: Does unplugging appliances actually make a meaningful difference to your electricity bill, or is it mostly a waste of time?

The answer, as it turns out, isn't quite as straightforward as either of us originally thought.

What happens when an appliance is turned off but still plugged in?

So when my husband says, "It's still using electricity," he isn't necessarily wrong.

Why does my husband unplug everything?

I eventually asked my husband why he was so determined to unplug nearly everything.

His answer was surprisingly reasonable.

"Because it's electricity we're paying for," he said.

He has a point.

If something is consuming energy while sitting unused, why pay for it?

His argument is especially convincing when you consider that we don't have just one electronic device in our homes.

Think about how many things might be plugged into outlets at any given moment.

There could be several televisions, computers, monitors, printers, game consoles, chargers, speakers, kitchen appliances, lamps, smart devices, and other electronics.

One device might consume very little energy in standby mode. But if a household has dozens of devices doing it continuously, those small amounts can accumulate.

The problem is that many people don't know which devices are actually drawing power.

And that's where another simple solution can be helpful.

You don't have to unplug everything

One of the biggest lessons I've learned from this discussion is that energy savings don't necessarily require turning your home into a daily unplugging marathon.

Instead, it may make more sense to focus on devices that are used infrequently or don't need to remain connected.

For example, if you have a television in a guest room that gets used once every few weeks, unplugging it when the room isn't being used may make more sense than unplugging the television you watch every night.

Similarly, if you have an old entertainment system that sits unused for months, cutting off its power may be worthwhile.

The same can apply to seasonal equipment.

Decorative lighting, certain hobby electronics, spare chargers, and devices that are rarely used can potentially be switched off at the outlet when they're not needed.

The key is prioritization.

What about phone chargers?

Phone chargers are one of the most common examples people bring up in discussions about standby electricity.

Many of us leave chargers plugged into the wall constantly.

We plug in our phones overnight, remove them in the morning, and then leave the charger sitting there until the next evening.

Does that charger continue using electricity?

A charger that remains connected to an outlet can consume some energy even when it isn't actively charging a phone. However, modern chargers are generally designed to minimize this idle consumption.

That means unplugging an unused charger can save some electricity, but the amount from a single charger is generally small.

If you're already in the habit of unplugging it, there's nothing wrong with continuing.

But if you're wondering whether forgetting to unplug one phone charger is going to dramatically increase your electricity bill, it probably isn't something worth losing sleep over.

The bigger issue may be older electronics

If you want to save electricity, it may be more productive to identify devices that genuinely consume significant energy rather than obsessing over tiny standby loads.

Heating and cooling equipment, water heaters, refrigerators, freezers, clothes dryers, ovens, electric heaters, and other major appliances can have a much greater impact on household energy consumption.

That doesn't make standby power irrelevant.

It simply means that energy efficiency is about putting your effort where it can have the greatest effect.

For example, reducing unnecessary heating or cooling can potentially make a much bigger difference than unplugging a small kitchen gadget.

Likewise, improving insulation, using efficient lighting, maintaining appliances properly, and choosing energy-efficient replacements when old equipment needs to be replaced can all be important parts of managing household electricity use.

So does unplugging really save money?

Yes, unplugging devices that consume electricity while idle can save electricity.

But whether you will notice a meaningful reduction on your bill depends on the particular devices in your home.

This is the part I had misunderstood.

I initially thought the answer was either "unplugging saves nothing" or "unplugging everything saves a fortune."

Neither is accurate.

The reality is somewhere in between.

Some electronics use virtually insignificant amounts of standby electricity.

Others may consume more.

The savings from unplugging one small device may be tiny. But if you have many devices drawing power continuously, eliminating unnecessary standby consumption can add up over time.

However, the savings may still be modest compared with the electricity used by major household appliances.

So my husband is technically right—but perhaps not for the reason he originally thought.

There's an easy way to find out

Rather than guessing, homeowners can measure how much electricity their electronics are actually consuming.

A plug-in electricity monitor can be used to measure the power consumption of individual devices.

This can be particularly useful for people who want to know whether a television, computer setup, entertainment center, or older appliance is consuming meaningful amounts of electricity while idle.

Instead of arguing over whether something is using "a lot" of electricity, you can measure it.

And once you know which devices are responsible for the largest standby loads, you can decide what is worth unplugging.

This seems much more practical to me than blindly unplugging every appliance in the house.

Power strips can make things easier

There is another solution that may satisfy both sides of the argument: power strips.

Instead of crawling behind a desk every night to unplug several electronics individually, you can connect multiple devices to a power strip.

For example, a home entertainment setup might include a television, game console, sound system, streaming device, and other equipment.

Rather than unplugging every cord separately, you can potentially switch off the power strip when the equipment isn't needed.

This can make it much easier to cut power to multiple devices at once.

Some people also use smart plugs or timers for equipment that follows a predictable schedule.

Again, the goal isn't to make life inconvenient.

The goal is to avoid paying for energy that isn't needed.

There are also appliances you shouldn't casually unplug

This is important.

Not every appliance should be treated like a toaster or phone charger.

Some devices are designed to remain connected to power continuously.

Refrigerators and freezers, for example, obviously need electricity to operate.

Other devices may have settings, clocks, security functions, or maintenance cycles that can be affected by being repeatedly disconnected from power.

Some electronics may also need to complete updates or other processes while connected.

That's why it's important to understand what an appliance does before making unplugging part of your routine.

For major appliances, following the manufacturer's instructions is the safest approach.

The point isn't to disconnect everything indiscriminately.

It's to eliminate unnecessary energy use where practical.

What about convenience?

This is where my husband and I still disagree.

He doesn't mind spending a few extra minutes each evening unplugging things.

I do.

There are certain appliances I use repeatedly throughout the day, and constantly reaching behind them to disconnect the cord would quickly become irritating.

If I'm going to use the coffee maker again tomorrow morning, unplugging it tonight may save a little electricity, but I have to ask myself whether that tiny saving is worth the inconvenience.

For rarely used electronics, the answer might be yes.

For something I use several times a day, I'm less convinced.

And that's probably the most realistic approach for many households.

A balanced strategy makes more sense

Rather than treating energy conservation as an all-or-nothing challenge, homeowners can create a simple routine.

Start by identifying electronics that don't need to stay powered.

Look at devices that sit unused for long periods.

Pay attention to older equipment.

Consider using a power strip for entertainment centers or home-office setups.

Unplug chargers and small electronics when they're not needed if doing so is convenient.

And, most importantly, focus on the major sources of household energy use as well.

Energy conservation isn't about performing one magical trick.

It's about dozens of small decisions that collectively reduce waste.

My opinion has changed

After looking into the issue more carefully, I have to admit that my husband wasn't completely wrong.

I still don't think we need to unplug every single appliance in the house after every use.

But I also no longer believe that a device uses absolutely no electricity simply because I've turned it off.

Some electronics can continue drawing power in standby mode.

The real question is whether the amount is significant enough to justify unplugging them.

For some devices, the answer may be yes.

For others, the savings may be so small that convenience matters more.

And that's why I think the smartest strategy is to be selective.

If something is rarely used, has noticeable standby consumption, or is older and inefficient, unplugging it may be worthwhile.

If something is used constantly and consumes almost nothing while idle, repeatedly unplugging it may not make much practical difference.

So who's right—me or my husband?

After all this, I would say we are both partly right.

My husband is correct that some appliances and electronics can continue consuming electricity when they appear to be switched off.

I'm correct that unplugging every single device in the house isn't necessarily going to produce dramatic savings.

The best approach is somewhere in the middle.

Instead of worrying about every tiny electrical load, identify the devices that actually matter.

Use an energy monitor if you're curious.

Use power strips to make disconnecting multiple devices easier.

Unplug equipment that doesn't need to remain powered for long periods.

And don't forget that bigger energy-saving opportunities often come from heating, cooling, hot water, lighting, and major appliances.

The most important thing is to understand where your electricity is going rather than assuming every plugged-in device is equally responsible for your bill.

So now I'm curious about everyone else's experience.
